The 2010 Ortley Beach Lifeguard Classic was certainly a test of athleticism and endurance. On Wednesday, July 28th, local teams competed in the oceanfront tournament consisting of rowing and swimming contests. Pete Bush, Beach Supervisor for the Township, said, "We invited 10 local teams to compete, including one beach from Monmouth, so we have lifeguards here from Sandy Hook down to LBI with teams from Ship Bottom, Surf City and Harvey Cedars." Bush added "Our guys work out every day and this is a reflection of their skills used daily on the beach. The main thing for us is a safe beach. Competition is great, but safety is most important." Last year, the Ortley Beach team took second place in their Lifeguard Tournament, bested by Surf City. Toms River Township Mayor Thomas F. Kelaher had one request for his Ortley Beach team, and that was to beat Surf City this year. They did so. However, they came in second again this year, with top honors going to Harvey Cedars and Lavallette rounding out third place. Kelaher said, "I look forward to this event every year. We have a great bunch of lifeguards and this gives them a chance to prove their skills." Out of the six events, Ortley Beach came in 1st place in both the "1000 Boat" and "Open Swim" events. Toms River Township Councilwoman Maria Maruca enjoyed watching the competitive spirit of the lifeguards and Councilman Maurice "Mo" Hill brought his grandson along to watch the contest. "This is a great family-friendly event and I'm glad to see so many residents here supporting our team," Hill said. Pete Bush thinks that the tournament has been going on for about 35-40 years now. If you missed the Ortley Beach Lifeguard Classic, there are more competitions going on up and down the Jersey Shore until September. For photos of the event please visit our photo gallery. |
